White Mountains Skate January 18th - dismissal 10:30 a.m.

The nordic ski teams will be dismissed at 10:30 a.m. for the long drive through Crawford Notch.  Remember to bring your lunch and snacks and water.

I have heard back from the White Mountains coach.  Their course for the skate race Thursday is in good condition.  The high school boys will race at 2:30 p.m, the high school girls at 3 p.m. and the middle school racers at 3:30 p.m.

If you are planning to drive up,  I highly recommend going through Crawford Notch on route 302 rather than through Franconia Notch.  In Conway turn left on West Side Road.  At the T, turn left to stay on West Side Road.  At the end turn left on route 302.  Turn right on route 3.  Continue on route 3 north of downtown Whitefield.  The school is on the left a few miles north of Whitefield's downtown.  Look for their sign.  The actual school is quite a ways down the long entrance road.

Banquet March 26th

The Nordic Ski Team end of the season banquet will be held at the Abenaki Lodge on Monday March 26th from 5 pm. until 6:30 p.m.  This celebration is for high school and middle school team members and their families.

For a successful end of the season banquet, we must once again depend on volunteers.

First and foremost:  Food

Do we have a volunteer to coordinate who is bringing what to the pot luck dinner?

Next:  Photos

Is someone willing to put together a slide show of the awesome season we just completed?

Clean Up Crew

We want to leave the lodge as clean as we found it.

Thanks for volunteering.  Let me know who is covering what (or volunteer via "reply all")

Mark your calendars.

Monday and Tuesday Skate Practice in preparation for Wed. Hanover meet

Monday and  Tuesday, February 12, and 13, will be skate practices at Abenaki in preparation for the Valentine's Day skate meet at Hanover.    Do not plan on waxing at the Nordic Skier during practice time.  You must practice your skate technique.  Thursday there will be a stop at the Nordic Skier if you must wax during practice time.

Practice technique and dates

All practices (Thursday this week and Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday next week) will be skate technique in preparation for our Wednesday the 14th skate meet in Hanover and our Saturday February 17th NH Series skate meet at White Mountains High School.

On Monday February 19th there will be no high school nordic practice since the middle school state meet is that day.  That will be the last day of the season for all middle school racers.

The Lakes and Mountains Championship on Wednesday, February 21st at Great Glen is for high school racers only.  The high school state meet is on Monday, March 5th.

We are getting a lot of positive feedback about our home meet.  Racers and Parents and other volunteers really made this event a success.

The tobogannless toboggan race down the alpine slope at the end of the meet featured the high school racers versus several adult volunteers.  The adult team won by a length despite the racer team having several practice runs.  haha

See you tomorrow.  Please help your parents shovel the foot of snow we are getting.

Greetings Nordic Parents,

Please confirm that you can make it to Abenaki on Tuesday by 1:30 pm and that you will be able to help until 4 p.m.

If you are the parent of a senior, your son or daughter will be recognized at 2 p.m. just before the start of the first race.

Hopefully you have signed up to bring food and/ or hot chocolate.  We offer it to all for free but we do accept donations.  Thank you to Wendy for organizing this.

We have a volunteer who will park the buses as they arrive.  Let's thank Tom Huckman.

Many thanks to Steve Flagg who will groom, mark the course and put up fencing Tuesday morning.  I think Frank might help him.  Any other volunteers for this?

Since it is classical, we will have waxing tables set up.  I think Mark, Frank, and Liz are on this.  Again, many thanks.

Alex Dria will be there as a trainer.  He is also a trained EMT.  Frank also is a professional at this.

Bobbi has been taking great photos.  Perhaps she can be the photographer for the event.

I will be at the registration table from 1:00 until 1:30.  After that, I will need someone there in case not all the teams have arrived.

At 1:30 p.m. I will meet with the start and finish volunteers.  I think Rhonda, Sharon, Matthew, and ?????  will help here.  We need at least 4 at the finish and at least 2 at the start.  Please let me know if you can come.

A very important job is the bracelet runner.  This person gets a count of how many start each round.  Then the appropriate number of bracelets to mark qualifiers are calculated and run over to the finish.  These bracelets are then given to the right number of top finishers.

Those at the start help line racers up by school.  Those at the finish form teams, one person who calls the bib numbers and the other who writes them down in the order they cross the finish.

We can also use volunteers along the course to watch for technique violations.

If we have enough volunteers, it will be great to have someone collect the Kingswood bibs and return them to a safe storage bin.

Please let me know if you are not named above and can come.  Also, please confirm if you are named above.

Let me know if there is something I am overlooking.

Thanks.

Change to race on Tuesday, Jan 30th

The Kingswood Nordic  Teams will be practicing skate ski technique on Monday at Abenaki.

The Tuesday race has been changed to skate technique and has been moved to the Strafford Nordic Center in Strafford, Vermont.  The route takes us through Tuftonboro to Moultonboro and beyond.

Any racers who must wax during practice time will be taken to the Nordic Skier to use the team waxing stations on Monday.

We will be dismissed at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday for the longer trip.

I am waiting to hear from the photographer to see if team photos are Tuesday before we leave or Saturday, February 3rd.  Be prepared for either.

For those new to the team, it is typical for the schedule to get  changed due to weather and snow conditions.

If you take part in the Paintball Biathlon at Gunstock (the email from Coach Flagg), please understand that this is on your own and not as part of the team schedule.  It is too late to change the team schedule of races.

Location change for the January 30th meet

Greetings Nordic Skiers and Parents,

As many of you know, the schedule handed out at the beginning of the season is subject to change due to conditions.  The recent melt, rain, and refreeze condition has race directors scrambling.

Our race scheduled for Tuesday, January 30th at the Plainfield School has been moved to the Strafford Nordic Center in Strafford, Vermont.  I will meet with our athletic director tomorrow to discuss a new dismissal time.

In addition, the conditions are not allowing a classical race.  The technique has been changed to skate!

Stay tuned.

practices the week of January 16th

The nordic teams are heading to White Mountains Regional High School in Whitefield, NH on Thursday, January 8th  for our first skate race.

We will be practicing skate technique at practices leading up to this race.

The weather on Wednesday could possibly cancel our practice.  For that reason,  if any racers need to use the Nordic Skier's wax stations during practice time, this should happen on Tuesday.

See you tomorrow.

Greetings Nordic Racers and Parents,

I have contacted the major nordic ski centers in New Hampshire about free and reduced rate passes for team members.

So far I have only heard back from Jackson and King Pine.

At Jackson you can identify yourself as a Kingswood nordic team member and get a free trail pass.  They accept donations.

At King Pine Nordic Center youcan identify yourself as a Kingswood Nordic Team Member and get a $5 trail pass.

If and when I hear from other areas, I will pass that information along.

Due to the postponement of the classical race at Great Glen, we will not be traveling to the Plainfield School on Tuesday, January 9th.  We will have nordic practice Monday the 8th, Tuesday the 9th and Wednesday the 10th.    All 3 days we will practice classical technique.

On Thursday, January 11th, we will travel to the Great Glen Trails (10:30 a.m. dismissal) for the classical meet.

I am still waiting on mandatory waivers (see the link in the last email) and on emails in case you ever want to sign your racer out from a meet to take them home.

transportation policy

Greetings Nordic Parents,

Please send me an email letting me know if you ever intend to sign your son or daughter out and take them home from a ski meet this season.  Also email me if you ever intend to pick your son or daughter up from either the Hannaford in Ossipee or the store at the Alton Circle when the team bus passes there.

The school board policy states that any pick up other than from the school (behind the Arts Center for our team) must be preceded by a written request at least 24 hours in advance.  One email from you now for the entire season should cover this policy requirement in the simplest fashion.

Thanks for your patience with this.  Also please remember that any pickup from a ski meet must also be accompanied by a signing of the clip board so we can have an accurate count before the return trip.  If you are picking up from Hannaford or the Alton circle, you must arrive there before the bus.

Thanks!

Wednesday we will practice at Abenaki.  The temperatures should be more normal.

practice December 13th and 14th

Greetings Nordic Parents and Skiers,

We will be skiing classic technique Wednesday and Thursday, December 13th and 14th.  Coach Flagg will let me know where conditions are best tomorrow.

The locker room door will be open from 6:50 a.m. until 7:20 a.m. tomorrow morning and again at 2:30 p.m.   Skis must be transported in ski bags.  Skis are not allowed on the regular school bus routes so arrangements must be made to drop them off at the locker room.

Remember neck warmers, hats, gloves, and lots of thin layers.  There will be a chill factor tomorrow.  The wind should be reduced in the shelter of the woods but be prepared for the open fields.

Greetings Nordic Skiers and Parents,

Monday, December 11th we will be attending a waxing clinic at the Nordic Skier.

If there is school on Tuesday, December 12th, please deliver your classic and skate skis and poles to the Nordic Ski Team locker room.  Regular school bus drivers do not allow these on the bus.  Parents or team members with their driving licenses must deliver them.  The locker room door is programmed to unlock between 6:50 a.m. and 7:20 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays whenever there is a late bus.  It opens again from 2:30 p.m. until 4:50 p.m.

We hope to be on snow Tuesday through Thursday.

Parent pick up of students after practice is between 4:30 p.m. and 4:40 p.m..  It is always behind the Arts Center, even if we do not take the team bus off site.
