registration deadline and tryout week

Greetings Girls Tennis Team Members and Potential Members,

If you have not already registered for the girls' varsity tennis team, the most important thing for you to do right away is to register before the deadline expires on March 19th.  Visit

and follow the instructions.

Monday, March 20th, at 2:40 p.m. meet behind the Arts Center.  Look for bus 29.  It is our team bus.  Monday will be a very important practice because it is the only day we have indoor tennis courts.  We will be going to the Smith Center at Brewster.  You can use the girls' locker room there before our practice.  We will leave the Smith Center at 4:30 p.m. in time to get back to Kingswood for the late bus.

Tuesday next week we are planning to take the team bus to the town courts.  If any snow is left after the boys' team shoveled, we will do our part to remove some snow from the courts.  If the courts are available for hitting, we will use them.

On Wednesday next week we will have a rules review and film session in Room 178 across from the practice gym.  Meet at Room 178 at 2:45 p.m.

We practice Monday through Thursday whenever there is a late bus.  We always get back in time for the late bus.  On match days you will have to arrange a ride home.  Team members are expected to stay for the entire match.  Matches usually take about two and a half hours.  The full schedule is online at

Practice March 27th

Greetings Girls Tennis Team Members,

Plan on an indoor workout today.  Come changed for a workout to Room 178 across from the practice gym by 2:40 p.m.    We will see if the main gym is available until the boys team uses it at 4 p.m.  We might also end up in the weight room for a while.   Bring your rackets.  We always have the foyers and hallways with the nerf balls.

I am working on alternate sites for practices the rest of the week.  Wednesday night at 5 p.m. is the new media day event.  Meet at room 178 at 4:45 p.m. for uniform issue.

Wednesday, March 29th

Greetings Girls Tennis Team Members and Parents,

Tomorrow (Wednesday, March 29th) come prepared to be outside for an hour.  We are going to team up with the boys' team to shovel the rest of the snow off the courts.   Meet at the team bus at 2:40 p.m.   Wear boots and bring gloves.  We will have shovels, tarps and a sled.

We will shovel for one hour from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m.   Then we will head back to Kingswood for uniform issue.   At 5 p.m. you will meet with House.  At 5:15 p.m. we will get in line for our team photo.    After the all spring athlete photo at 6:10 p.m. everyone will be dismissed to go home for dinner.

See you tomorrow.

Practice April 3rd and 4th

Greetings Girls Tennis Team Members,

I know!   We have been working so hard on clearing the courts and then Saturday happened.

The good news is that you will need sunscreen tomorrow.

We are going to focus all of our efforts on just court 4 tomorrow.  If we are able to get that one court operational, we can practice outside.   I will also bring old balls and old rackets so we can get some hitting in.

Tuesday will be an indoor practice.   For now that is as far into the future that I can see.

Keep the faith.  With any luck we will have our home opener against Pembroke on Friday.

Tuesday April 4th practice canceled due to weather, outside the 5th

Greetings Girls' Tennis Team Members,

All after school activities have been canceled for Tuesday, April 4th.  Be prepared to hit (and possibly shovel) on Wednesday, April 5th.  We have promised the town that the courts will be totally clear by Wednesday afternoon so that they will put the nets up before our home opener on Friday, April 7th.

Girls Tennis loses to Manchester West 3-6 in a record long match

The Kingswood Girls Tennis team hosted Manchester West in a record long 3 hour and 40 minute match.  Coming up on the wrong end of a tiebreaker and with two 7-9 losses, the 3 to 6 loss was almost a 6 to 3 win.  The match was the first time the girls team was able to practice on outdoor courts with nets up.  West had the advantage of being on courts the last few weeks.  Jasper Shapiro came back from a 3 game deficit in singles to bring her set to a tiebreaker.  She lost this 6 to 8.  Kara Phu won her singles 8 to 5.  Brooke Seigars won her singles 8 to 5.  Danielle Schillereff lost her singles 4 to 8.  Rebecca Coache lost her singles 5 to 8.  Bri Heald won her singles 8 to 6.  After splitting the singles, the Knights needed to win two of the three doubles to win the match.  Shapiro and Seigars dropped the number 1 doubles 5 to 8.  Both Phu and Coache at second doubles and Schillereff and Heald at third doubles kept it close and at one point were both at 7 to 6.  Both ended up losing 7 to 9, a full three hours and 40 minutes after the match started.   The team has had one longer match a few years ago when there was a one hour weather hold.  This was the longest continuous play match in memory.  The team's match against Kennett at Kennett has been postponed until May because of snow in North Conway.  The team will host St. Thomas on Thursday.

Here is a copy of the email that was sent after the match:

Greetings Tennis Team Members,

You played a great match against undefeated Manchester West.  The only time we have had a longer match was against InterLakes but that match was 4 hours because of a one hour weather hold.  3 hours and 40 minutes is the longest continuous play match I can remember.  A long match is a close match.

I am proud of the way that noone gave up.  Holes were dug and holes were climbed out of.

At one point both second and third doubles were at 7-6.  We were two games away from a match win.  Jasper's 6-8 loss in the tiebreaker was also as close as it can get

Today, Tuesday, April 11th, we will start our team tournament.  The first to win 2 games (no ad) will win.

Wednesday, April 12th, the boys' team will be at the town courts competing against Kennett.  Our match has been postponed to May, probably May 11th.  The team bus will run to the boys' game for those who need to get back for late bus.  On Wednesday, if you plan to watch the boys compete past 4:45 p.m., you can take your own car (or take the team bus there and arrange to get picked up later).  We will see what we can learn from watching the boys while supporting their team.

Thursday, April 13th, we are home against St. Thomas.  That is also team picture day.  If you want to purchase your own photo, please fill out the photo envelope in advance and bring it with payment on Thursday.  There are extra envelopes on the bus.

Thursday April 13th is still picture day but match is postponed

As you know today, Thursday, April 13th is team picture day.  All team members should be in uniform for the photo.  We are going ahead with this even though I was just informed that today's match has been postponed until May 9th.

I have the opinion that since we were ready and able to host both Pembroke April 7th and St. Thomas today, their cancellations constitute a forfeits.  I am told the NHIAA is being reluctant to force forfeits.  This is going to make our schedule next week and in May very busy.  House will bring this up at his athletic directors' meeting next week.

To summarize,  we have team pictures and practice in uniform today.  Tomorrow we will be at Foss Field learning from and cheering on the boys' team as they defeat Kennett.

Friday, May 12th we host Windham.  Meet at the team bus at 2:40 p.m.
