The Girls Varsity Ice Hockey team has won their fourth game of the season with a thrilling 2-0 shutout of ConVal. With only 8 healthy skaters and two goalies the team took the three hour bus ride Saturday to take on the Cougars. Kingswood got off to a slow start but netminder Nikki Cayon stopped 13 shots to keep the score tied at bagels after one period. The Knights got thieir legs going in the second and made many great plays. Brittany Lapolla hustled into the corner and centered a pass to Bre Leblanc who netted what would become the game winning goal. Sofia Marshall, Alissa Baldwin, and Jess Distler played solid D in front of their goalie and the second period ended 1-0. In a close game the whole team plays defense and the Lady Knights did just that in the third period. Shawna Knowles, Rebecca Dow, Savannah Thomas, Brittany Lapolla, and Bre Leblanc banded with the defense and kept the Cougars off the board. Brittany Lapolla added an insurance goal with a great hustling play to win a puck race and throw the puck in the net. NIkki ended up stopping all 33 shots she faced for her third shutout of the season.
Through all the ups and downs, injuries and illness I could not be more proud of the heart and dedication the girls i have had the privilege to coach have showed this year. It would have been real easy to give up and call it a season with all the set backs this team has seen this year, and yet with each issue that arises a determination comes that would make any coach proud. I want to say thank you to the girls who put forth the energy and effort to make this the most winning season Kingswood Girls Hockey has ever seen.
